Review - Shingeki No Kyojin Season 2's Episode 1

After the long and painful years of waiting, the first episode of one of the most anticipated anime in 2017 has finally aired! With the overwhelming success of the first season, most fans are sure to have overwhelming expectations as well. The question is, will it live up to the expectations? Or will most audience claim that the first season is better?

Well, since it's only the first episode as of now, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Anyway, here's what I think about the episode! Whether you agree with me or not is up to you. Also, please take note though that this post would include spoilers.

The episode has started out with the usual narration, although this time, the bit about Annie Leonhart is narrated as well. Some of you might say that the opening narrations are boring. I think not. No matter how redundant they may seem, these narrations actually help in setting the atmosphere to the episode. Right?

Anyway, after that would be the scene where the existence of the wall titans are discovered. I totally loved how they introduced a major problem right on the first two minutes of the episode, just like how it was on season 1.

And then the new opening song would play.

shingeki no kyojin season 2, attack on titan season 2, s2

Performed by Linked Horizon (Again. But I'm not complaining), the song is titled "Dedicate All Your Hearts". As most of us probably expected, the song is totally thumbs-up-worthy. Though honestly, Jiyuu no Tsubasa (Wings of Freedom) is still my favorite.

To me, whenever I hear Guren No Yumiya, it feels like like it focuses on every character's power and strength, how they fight and how they struggle to be strong. Jiyuu no Tsubasa feels more like an anthem. Whenever I hear it, it's like I feel everyone's strong will to attain the freedom they've dreamed for so long. And now, while the new song is obviously a bit mellow compared to the other two (tho it's still powerful nonetheless), I kinda feel this heartwarming-sensation. I've been looking for the right term to describe it. And as soon as I saw the title, I realized it does feel like Dedication.

Does it seem like I'm too much of a feeler? Lol. Basically, Guren No Yumiya = Strength and Power; Jiyuu No Tsubasa = Will and Freedom; Dedicate All Your Hearts = Dedication and Relationships.

Moving on, the next scenes were okay. Not too exciting, not too boring either. It consists scenes of:

(1) Hanji freaking out over the idea of titans living inside the walls. Not the usual "freaking-out" of Hanji where he/she's kinda crazy. Seems to me like she totally terrified.

(2) Levi in his usual deadpanned glory.

(3) Sasha and Connie's usual antics and the whole 104th squad just chilling out.

(4) Eren offering to buy a new scarf for Mikasa. She didn't reply but she's obviously gonna say no. it's like their red string of fate. Lol.

And then we are bombarded with the information that Wall Rose has been breached! What comes after that is a number of combat preparations and a bit of fight scenes. The Beast Titan is also introduced towards the end of the episode. In case you don't know, the Beast Titan is a titan which seemingly looks like a Gorilla or something. It is also able to speak the human language, much to the horror of Mike Zacharias.

Anyway, the best thing about the episode is how they ended it. Of course, someone who's been with us since the first season is gonna die. It's to be expected, really. Unfortunately for Mike, it just had to be him. His death scene actually put me on edge for a while. And I must say, his voice actor's screams of agony sounded so convincing!

Now that I think about it, the people behind this anime said that someone important is gonna die. Could they be referring to Mike? I dunno.

Anyway, not much has changed about the art. It's still the usual style that we're used to in the first season. The transitions between scenes were okay as well. I liked how they used a flashback to show that Wall Rose has been breached. Background music was not so memorable (kinda understandable since there's not much fight scenes yet.)

The first episode definitely wasn't disappointing. It's not so amazing either. It's not bad, but it hasn't exceeded the amazingness of the first season yet. Well, it's just the first episode. Who knows how the story will go? In the end, I do think we can expect something big from this season. After all, the horror, gore and anticipation element of the story that we loved so much is still evidently present!

Have you watched the first episode too? What do you think?

P.S. Levi is mine.
